5 Books for Wives

Marriage ain’t easy.

Being a wife ain’t easy. There are so many obstacles that can get in the way of loving your husband well, and 99% of those blockages come from the condition of your heart.

Although life’s challenges, societal standards, and other people can put pressure on a marriage, it is ultimately the heart issues that weigh the heaviest. Things like selfishness, pride, anger, discontentment, comparison, and jealousy (to name a few) are the most dangerous roadblocks we face as wives. And I’m not talking about those things in your husband- I’m talking about your heart!

Thankfully, we can find lots of wisdom in the Word of God that helps us deal with our pride, jealousy, and all the rest of our junk. There are so many resources that have shifted my mindset and challenged me to grow in my marriage. God has used these books to open my eyes to where I fall short, but also to teach me how I can lean on Him to become a healthier and more loving wife. And as I’m only five years into marriage, I’m just getting started in my journey of Godly wifehood.

There are SO many amazing books for wives, but here are a few of my favorites.

1. "The Fruitful Wife" by: Hayley DiMarco

This book gave me such a fresh perspective on the Fruits of the Spirit. So often I try to force peace, joy, and self-control, but DiMarco helped me realize that these are named fruits for a reason- they are the product of a healthy relationship with the tree (the Father). Jam-packed full of scripture and personal stories, "The Fruitful Wife" will give you the handles you need to radiate the Fruits of the Spirit in your marriage.

2. "The Power of the Praying Wife" by: Stormie Omartian

How often do you pray for your husband? Is it your first reaction when conflict arises? Is it a priority even when there is no conflict? "The Power of the Praying Wife" definitely convicted me in the best way. I realized that if I believe in the power of prayer, and if I want the best for my husband, why am I not more diligent in praying for my man? This book is an absolute must for all wives at any stage of marriage!

3. "Intimate Issues" by: Linda Dillow & Lorraine Pintus

Sex is such an important part of marriage- how can I make this list and not highlight a book about sex! The Church is pretty good about talking about waiting until marriage, but I have found that we rarely talk about our sex life once we get married. Dillow and Pintus hold nothing back as they give practical advice, as well as spiritual wisdom into our role as wives. BUT, because of the real-realness of this book, I highly suggest you wait to read this until after the wedding!

4. "Boundaries in Marriage" by: Dr. Henry Cloud & Dr. John Townsend

This one is a whole lot less sexy than the previous book mentioned! You may even be thinking, “Why do I need boundaries from my spouse? Aren’t we supposed to be one?” I had such a flawed view of boundaries in marriage. I used to think that they were only for rigid people who didn’t truly connect with their spouses. But Cloud and Townsend explain how boundaries actually bring you and your spouse closer- to each other and to God, which is the way marriage is intended to be. There is so much practical and spiritual knowledge in this book, and it’s a great one to read alongside your husband!

5. "Seasons of Soap" Bible Study

Seasons of Soap Vol 1

This one looks a little bit different than the rest, as the only words written in it are from the Bible! The "Seasons the Soap" journals give scriptures for various seasons of life, including anxiety, transition, purpose, rest, and so many more. With each daily scripture is a whole bunch of space for you to journal your thoughts, questions, and feelings. Pour it all out to the Lord. And watch yourself grow through the season. This one made the list because the first way to be a healthy wife is to have a healthy relationship with your Father. Seasons of Soap journals are an excellent way to elevate your daily time with God. Bonus: there are four volumes, and counting! So much opportunity to grow!

Wives: Don’t get stagnant or weary. lean on your Father, and dig into the resources all around you!
