We are the Church

Small groups, life groups, connect groups – whatever you wanna call them, My City GROUPS are meeting EVERY WEEK in 2023! For those of you who are newer to our church, you may be intimidated by joining a group…but don’t worry! This guide will prepare you for everything you need to know so you can attend a group with clarity, confidence, and excitement! Now, let’s answer some of your questions:

1. What are Groups?

Groups at My City Church are communities of people committed to growing together by learning the Word of God and lifting one another up in prayer. Groups meet in person to hang out, discuss a passage of scripture from that day’s Bible Reading Plan, and pray together. Groups are a small piece of the larger corporate gathering, with the entire church body represented. What do we mean by that? We believe people need to be exposed to every season of life; singles around married couples, ages around other ages. Our groups meet in leaders’ homes or at restaurants. We have men’s groups, women’s groups, everyone welcome (co-ed) groups, and gatherings on Wednesday nights for our youth students called YTH Crews. Paid child care is not provided at Groups, but your children are always welcome to attend with you!

2. Why should I join a Group?

Groups exist in order for us to be discipled and to disciple one another. Groups are not a teaching platform for one person to share their revelations from God, but rather an opportunity for iron to sharpen iron (Proverbs 27:17). We truly believe that you are not meant to live this life alone. None of us are – especially those of us who are trying to live God-honoring lives! We need community. It’s not a luxury – it’s a necessity. When life gets tough, who do you go to? When you are at your lowest, you need Godly men and women in your corner ready to encourage you, pray for you, and contend for you. Groups are a place to belong and to bring our friends! It’s a place where we can be honest, vulnerable, and unashamed of where we’ve been or where we are because we’ve all been there. Groups help you grow and flourish so you can live the victorious life Jesus meant for you to live!

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17 (NIV)

3. What should I expect when I go to a Group?

Starting in 2023, our My City Church Groups will be going through our church-wide Bible Reading Plan. Group leaders will also discuss upcoming church events and have guiding questions for discussion based on that day’s scripture passages. Most importantly, Groups end with prayer – praying for each other’s needs and encouraging one another in the faith. You can expect an atmosphere of communion with the Lord, fellowship with other believers, and a refreshed spirit as you leave your Group. If you have any questions about where to meet, what to bring, where to park, etc., feel free to reach out to your Group leader at any time through the Church Center app! They will be excited to hear from you and will want to make you feel right at home!

4. How can I be a part of Groups?

We have 3 ways for you to be a part of a Group at My City Church! You can be a Member, a Host or a Group Leader!

1. Member

Members are contributors and regular attenders of a Group, who participate in the discipleship process through the reading of the Word of God and prayer. This may look like partnering with other members in prayer, participating in discussion regularly, and helping hold other members accountable to their own walk with Christ.

2. Host

On top of being a Member, Hosts are entrusted with creating an environment that is welcoming for members to attend. The Host is primarily in charge of preparing the Group's meeting location and facilitating the hospitality of the evening. This may look like preparing their home for people to gather every week, preparing refreshments if needed, and planning an alternative location for the Group to meet if necessary.

3. Group Leader

Group Leaders are faithful, devoted followers of Christ, who bear the responsibility of creating a culture of discipleship within the group; not only by discipling, but also by teaching others to disciple each other. The spiritual weight of the Group is entrusted to the Group Leader; this means lifting up members in prayer on a regular basis, checking in with members when they are absent, and urging members to partner with them in the discipleship of the entire Group. The Group Leader is also in charge of taking attendance every week, attending the Groups Leadership Nights, and ensuring the rhythm of the Group meets weekly.

5. I’m still not sure! *insert excuse here*

I know you may still be feeling a little hesitant about joining a Group…but trust me when I say that it will be one of the best decisions you could ever make as you go through this life of following Jesus. Take the leap! It is worth your time because you’re not just investing your time in creating friendships – you’re investing your time in strengthening your own spiritual health! Let us be like the early Christian believers in Acts 2:42 – “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” This is what community is all about! Let’s go into this next season full of faith knowing that the best is yet to come!

“Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise. Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.” Hebrews 10:23-25 (NLT)
