Did you know that My City Church has seven core values?
These values make up who were are as #CityChangers in Omaha, Nebraska, centering us on a common purpose and a firm foundation. This blog is part two (find part one here) in a series of posts that dive into each of our core values as a church, and how you can live these out not just on a Sunday morning, but also in your workplace, household, and everyday life.
Passionate In Expression
Everything we do, we do it with passion. From our worship to our service, we do it with energy. Passion drives us: Passion for Jesus. Passion for people. Passion for His church.
Monday morning. 7:05 alarm.
You push yourself out of bed and go through the same old routine. As you brush your teeth, your mind runs through today’s agenda. Meeting with your sales team, recap of last week’s event, completion of that task, and then come home to finish that laundry you’ve been putting off. Maybe make tacos for dinner again, those are easy. Rewatch the same episodes of The Office (and still laugh every time). Just a normal Monday. Nothing too exciting. Nothing to really be passionate about.
I don’t know about you, but this is definitely what most of my days look like. Although I love my job, my home, and my family, I rarely find myself so passionate that I want to cartwheel my way into work. Everyday life is just not that exciting. In fact, life can be difficult, exhausting, sorrowful, disappointing, and mundane. So it’s easy to allow our attitudes and actions to follow suit. It’s natural to live life on auto-pilot, going from one thing to the next, and experiencing only temporary passion based on momentary emotions or events.
But God calls us into a much more abundant and fulfilling life. We serve a God that does BIG things. Like life-changing, chain-breaking, mindset-shifting things. He is always present, always working, and always victorious. If the countless stories in the Bible of miracles, freedoms, and triumphs are not enough to bring you excitement, get around some community and start asking people to share their testimonies of how God showed up in their life. I guarantee you’ll hear some amazing things, because God is living and active, and that is something to be passionate about!
This passion does not come from forcing smiles, mustering up hype, or just yelling all the time. This passion starts with being mindful of the things of God, and allowing that to bring you genuine excitement and gratefulness.
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Philippians 4:8
The verse encourages us to gather up the promises, words, and works of Jesus and meditate on them. Reflect on them, ponder them, allow them to settle into our minds and hearts. Our thoughts are incredibly powerful! They are the root of our words and actions. So can you imagine what behaviors might change in your life if you started to really think on the things of the Lord? Can you imagine the levels of gratitude, expectancy, and passion that would rise up in you as a result of this thinking? I’m getting passionate just considering it!
Feelings are fleeting and exciting events come and go. But the Word of God never changes, and it is there that we can find genuine passion and everlasting joy.
So walk into your shift with passion - expectant for the opportunities God has prepared for you today. Make dinner for your family with passion - thankful that you get to serve the ones you love. Write that English paper with passion - excited for the steps you are taking for God’s plans in your life. Pray with passion - truly believing God hears you and answers your call. Walk your dog with passion - praising the Lord for the trees, the sun and all His glorious creation. Have coffee with a friend with passion - mindful of the gift of community in all the highs and lows. Read your Bible with passion - full of faith that God is alive and at work within you.
Because living a passionate and energetic life is not just for you, it is a display to everyone around you of the freedom and joy found in a life with Christ. You heard that right- your laughter, gratitude, excitement and passion can draw people to God.
