Certified Lover: You Get What You Want

Are we worshippers of God, or the world? Are you pursuing something above Christ?

Lead Pastor Eli Nelson preached the third message of our series, Certified Lover. In this sermon, Pastor Eli talked about idolatry and our love affair with ourselves and the world.

If you want to be a friend to the world, you make yourself an enemy of God. If we are fully devoted and worshipping God, we have no room for anything else. We are ALL priests before God! He desires you and me, and we are called to be worshippers of God. And if we aren’t worshipping God, we will find something else to worship. (Read in Exodus 22 about the golden calf)

What is behind idolatry? Selfish desire.

It’s making a God in your own image. It’s not a “Your will be done, Lord” but a “MY will be done”.

“Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen." Romans 1:24-25 (NIV)

We will always have the choice to go back to what we knew. Will we? Or will we trust that what our Father commands is for our best? We must switch our thinking from a “I can’t do that” to a “That is not God’s will for my life, and I will trust He knows best!”

“But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.” Ephesians 5:3-4 (NIV)

To be full of God, is to be content. To be content enables us to receive from God. Lack of being content causes us to look for fulfillment outside of God (idolatry).

Contentment drives us to God. Covetousness drives us away from God.

“Sin will take you further the you ever wanted to go, keep you longer than you ever wanted to stay, and cost you more than you ever wanted to pay.” – Ps. Eli Nelson

How do we rule over sin?

"The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." 1 Corinthians 15:56-57 (NIV)

Many people view God's law as a restriction rather than a delight. Choices based off of restriction will never deal with the heart. There are just some things we don't need to pray about - things like "Should I watch that rated R movie with nudity?" "Should I serve in the church?" "Should I give to the church?" These things are a given! Saying "but it doesn't feel bad" is not a reason to excuse participation in immoral activities. You can hear God, but not follow God or truly know God if you don't surrender your life over to Him.

"There is way that appears right, but in the end it leads to death." Proverbs 14:12 & 16:25 (NIV)

Our goal as believers is to move from “My will be done” to “Your will be done, Lord!” Hallowed be your name! Not my will, but Your will be done. For we know that You are all-knowing, and as the Creator of us and all, we know You know best.

Let us worship the Creator, not the created thing!
