How to Have Childlike Faith

How do we get a child-like faith?

Today I went for a walk with my dogs around our neighborhood to Zorinsky Lake. I made a point to take it all in - the crunching of the leaves, the strong breeze cooling off my overdressed body, the creaking of the trees as they swayed, and the squirrels rustling through the woods. We even had a deer startle us as he crossed our path.

Enjoying nature brings me closer to God. With all of these intricate details right in front of my eyes and ears, how could I ever question that God is our Creator? Yet, sometimes I do. With all of the distractions in our world today, it is easy to miss the details. It is easy to fall far from God. I can just picture God in heaven shaking his head as we walk around with cell phones in hand, ready to take our next selfie or video for social media. Perhaps he’s trying to get our attention with a beautiful mountaintop or an eye-catching tree with leaves of gold, yet we walk on by because we are busy talking on our phones. Or maybe we’re making our favorite dinner, but are so rushed for football practice or our next agenda item, that we miss the amazing aromas of the fresh foods God made for us to savor.

Is God trying to get your attention?

As a member of the Tots team at My City Church, I have the pleasure of teaching our youngest generation about God. October and November have centered around Creation. This coming Sunday, we will be talking about the creation of Adam and Eve. At first that task sounded very daunting- especially trying to relay this truth to toddlers. However, as I continued my walk and took in the fresh air, my mind cleared and I felt a sense of calm. I was reminded of the term we Christians know as “child-like” faith. One of the verses I think of is Matthew 18:3:

“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

So what does it mean to become “like little children”? Aren’t we told to be wise, to not make decisions based on our emotions, and to be educated and mature in our faith? Yes. But if you come join our Kids classrooms on Sunday mornings, you will quickly see what child-like faith is all about. Children are asking A LOT of questions. As difficult as that may be sometimes, they are trusting our answers about God. They are always seeking more answers - “why, why, why?”- and they are depending on us to keep them safe and loved. Did you know that kids are craving boundaries? Yes, it’s true. Boundaries give kids the sense of safety and knowledge that an adult is there to protect them.

So how about us adults? How can we “change and become like little children”?

Are we willing to put our adult distractions aside and notice the amazing details of His creation? Are we asking questions about our faith? We may know the stories, but are we getting deeper with “why, why, why?” Are we trusting God and His will, not our own agenda? “Nah, bro, I got this. I’m manifesting a good outcome and the universe is aligning.” Really? Are we seeking more answers in God’s Word…like actually reading the Bible? I loved it when I first heard Pastor Eli say, “Why are we asking God to speak to us when He’s already given us what He has said?” Are we depending on our Father?

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5 (NIV)

Are we craving God’s boundaries and turning away from our sins? Luke 13:3 says, “I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.” By the time I finished my walk and returned home, I realized that these children are probably teaching me more than I am teaching them. I get to witness their child-like faith in action every Sunday. I’m reminded that I need to put my distractions aside, then ask, trust, seek, depend on, and crave the Word of God. That is child-like faith! What a wonderful Creator is He.
