Transformation happens in community
“All scripture is inspired by God and it is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip His people to do every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NLT)
Groups at My City Church are a small piece of the larger corporate gathering; made up of communities of people committed to growing together by learning the Word of God and lifting one another up in prayer.
In the book of Ephesians, Paul encourages the members at the church of Ephesus to “put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil” (v. 13). He continues to encourage them to put on every piece of the armor of God while he is describing the purposes for each item. He ends this encouraging statement with this, “Take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (v. 17). The Word of God is the key to experiencing growth in our walk with the Heavenly Father. When we have the Word of God written in our hearts and are continuously arming ourselves with it, every day, we are prepared and ready to endure the trials of this world.
Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” By attending a Group at My City Church, you are given the opportunity to participate in ‘iron sharpening iron.’ When we join with one another to read the Word of God, we are in the practice of sharpening one another’s iron (or swords).
Standing firm on the Word of God
This year, we are embarking on a journey together, as a church, to read the entire Bible in one year. As we join together to "sharpen our iron," and arm ourselves with the Word of God, we will see transformation in every area of our lives; from our confidence in the Father, and our reliance on the Spirit, to our proclamation of who Jesus is.
Father, we thank you for giving us the Word of God. We thank you for allowing us to commune with one another and with You. Lord, we pray for your hand of protection over Groups at My City Church as we embark on this journey of discovering your Word together this year. We pray for endurance, we pray for confidence, and we pray for hearts that long to know You more. We pray for the young to see visions and the old to dream dreams. Lord, allow your Word to become alive in our hearts and our lives, as we confidently seek more of You this year. Father, we pray for blessing over marriages, families, and friendships as we meet on a weekly basis to encounter your presence. We pray all these things in the name of Jesus. Amen.
