When we think of a building, it’s tempting to think of the endless list of tasks and factors that need to happen to get there -
the time, the resources, the finances, the logistics, and the building materials.
What we don’t often think about is how we can BE church builders. In the book of Haggai, God gives us clear instruction on how to be builders of His church:
"“Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,” says the Lord." Haggai 1:8
To be church builders, we must go up into the mountains.
This verse makes it clear that there is a journey to being a church builder. Nobody climbs a mountain in a day. Going up a mountain requires risk, patience, strength, and sacrifice. It is not for the faint of heart - it is for those bold enough to climb.
We must bring down timber.
That journey up the mountain is not without purpose. God uses it to provide the materials and resources that we will use to build the church, whether those materials are physical or spiritual. We must be faithful with the resources that God has given us. Imagine taking the time to climb the mountain, and complaining that there’s only wood, and not steel - it would be pointless.
We must build the house.
Building the house requires action on our part. WE are the ones building. WE take the resources gathered from our journey, and use them to construct the house of the Lord. No one will do it for us.
The Lord must be honored.
The ultimate purpose of building the house is to honor and lift up the name of the Lord. It is not to have the slickest production, the best sound, the largest space to hold the largest amount of people - it is ONLY to honor the Lord.
Lord, I pray today that you would mold and shape us into church builders. I pray that we would understand the sacrifice that is needed to truly build your house for your glory. I pray that you would give us the energy to build your church, and that above all, your name would be honored and lifted up through our future building. In Your name we pray - Amen!
