Day 19: God’s Provision (The Giving)

Giving in church can be considered a hot button topic.

“Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” ‭‭James‬ ‭1‬:‭16‬-‭17‬ ‭(NIV)

Talking about giving money in the church can be uncomfortable. At least it seems that way from the outside looking in. And that's because of the misconception that has come with giving over the years. “How could the church ask for the money that I work hard to make?” Well let's talk about that.

God owns it all

God first gave His son to us to die on the cross for our sins. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Not only that, but He first gave life. See God created us, breathed life into our bodies, and created the very soil we walk on.

We do not give because we have extra in the budget this month or because morally we are feeling bad and giving money to a church or to a charity makes us feel better about ourselves. We give because God gave us everything we have. When that mindset in us begins to change and we see our thought process about giving change, we understand that the salary we make from the jobs that we have was never ours to begin with - it's God’s, and He is entrusting us with that. And if it's God's money, then who am I not to give back, at the bare minimum, that 10% tithe He asks us for?

He is a good Father who gives good gifts to His children

The beautiful part of this is when we give with a cheerful heart, not out of compulsion or reluctance (2 Corinthians 9:7), we see that God blesses us with more because The Lord sees He can trust you with what is His. Just ask the servant who took his master's five coins and doubled it (Matthew 25:14-30). Understand that what we are given on this earth and in our lifetimes comes from the Lord. Every good gift is a gift from above. Don't forget to thank the Lord for all He has blessed you with.

Lord, I thank you today for everything in my life that you have given me. I thank you for my spouse, I thank you for my house, I thank you for my job, and I thank you for the skills you have blessed me with. Lord, today I pray that everyone who gives and continues to give that you would bless us in a mighty way. I pray that every resource that is tithed to the Church is used to expand the Kingdom of God. Whether it be time, talents, or resources, I pray that it is a blessing to you and to your House. Amen.
