Community is one of the most essential pieces of our walks with Christ.
"They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved." Acts 2:42-47
Every time I read this passage of scripture, I am always in awe of how the early church was so devoted to God and to each other. But did you know that that same kind of community can happen even in today’s world? That’s God’s desire for you. And guess what? You can!
You are not meant to live this life alone.
None of us are – especially those of us who are trying to live God-honoring lives! We need community. It’s not a luxury – it’s a necessity. When life gets tough, who do you go to? When you are at your lowest, you need Godly men/women in your corner ready to encourage you, pray for you, and contend for you. And that’s why we have My City Groups. Groups are a place to belong and to bring our friends! It’s a place where we can be honest, vulnerable, and unashamed of where we’ve been or where we are because we’ve all been there. Groups help you grow in freedom so you can live the victorious life Jesus meant for you to live! If you are reading this and you think to yourself, “I don’t really have friends like that...” Then let’s ask God for it. He wants that for you! But the first step is for you to take - join a Group. Go to NEXT Class. Reach out! There is a genuine, Godly community of people waiting for you.
If you’re a leader reading this, let this be a reminder to keep going.
Even when leading a Group gets tough, even when people don’t respond, even when people don’t come, it is never in vain. Don’t grow weary! Keep planting those seeds because you never know when the harvest will come! You are creating more of an impact than you realize. And don’t neglect your other relationships either - your friends and partners in ministry - because we need each other now more than ever! We are stronger, healthier, and better when we are unified in the body of Christ. Let’s pray:
Father, I thank you for My City Church. Thank you for the genuine community we have here. I pray we continue to love one another, serve one another, encourage one another, contend for one another, and empower one another to be all you have called us to be. Help us to be like the early Christian church - devoted to your Word and to each other. May we never neglect gathering together and sharing our whole hearts with one another because we know that there is freedom and forgiveness when we share our offenses and wrongdoings with our brothers and sisters in Christ. I pray we continue to pursue Godly community and that you would bring those people into our lives so we can live in the fullness of all you have for us. We love you, Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
