Today you can not look at your phone without being told someone else’s opinions on how you should live your life, what you should believe, or who you should follow.
Constantly living in this world can give even the most devout Christians a hardened heart. Oftentimes, our hearts can harden over time little by little without us even realizing it.
But what does it mean to have a divided or hardened heart?
I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh. Ezekiel 11:19
When our hearts are caught up in this world, they become hard as stone. It becomes difficult for us to love people the way God intended us to and for us to love God. This is different from guarding your heart. When we guard our hearts, we are protecting them from those things not placed there by God. But when our hearts are hardened, the actual heart becomes impenetrable, restricted, and withheld.
It can start with something small - someone speaking something over you or even you speaking something over yourself. It can be too many news stories or posts on social media. It can be as simple as our day to day life but with each one of the “offenses,” our hearts become harder and harder each day.
We must regularly pray for God to give us an undivided heart. It is not something we pray once and can check off our list, but rather a prayer we can pray everyday.
God, I thank you for your love and unending grace. I thank you that while I fall short everyday, you make everything new. I pray today you make in me a new heart. Remove the things of this world that have hardened my heart and that have made me lose focus on you. May my heart be clean and filled with only the things you have put there. Renew my heart, and break my heart for what breaks yours. Let my heart be a reflection of yours. May I love your people the way you have intended them to be loved. When people see the way I love those around me, make them not see me, but You. God, I give my heart and every broken piece of it to you. May it all be for your glory. Amen.
