Are you being faithful where you currently are?
Or are you dreaming about future goals or changes in a career path, thinking you could make a bigger impact if your situation was different? I’ve learned from experiences and disappointment that often times God won’t open a door if you’re not being faithful where He has already placed you. That could be a geographical location, but it can also be within your family, your job, your friendships, your community, or your church. Wherever we have been placed, our purpose is to be a light and share the love of Jesus with everyone we encounter.
This requires us to love the world–and our city–as much as God does.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 (NIV)
It is easy to see parts of the world that are experiencing hardship and feel the tug to take a mission trip to help the people affected. While that is a necessary and worthwhile endeavor, what many people fail to realize is that our God-given purpose–or mission–can be pursued where we currently are, and everywhere else we may go. We have numerous opportunities to mission for Jesus every day and to have a servant heart that always asks, “how can I serve this person better? How can I leave things better than how I found them?”
“Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order to provide for urgent needs and not live unproductive lives.” Titus 3:14 (NIV)
I remember last January, when I was praying into clarity and vision for the calling God has placed on my life, I discovered the song, “Start Right Here” by Casting Crowns. The lyrics moved me to tears as they sang the truth that if the church wants to see a change in the world out there, it has to start right here. So that is my encouragement to you today, whether you’re an Omaha native, new to Omaha, or are still trying to figure out your calling:
Just start right here, and start right now.
Father, I thank you so much for the purpose and intentionality in where you’ve placed each and every one of us. Today we surrender to you this season we are in, as a church and as individuals, for your Spirit to guide us and use us for the work of Your Kingdom here in Omaha. Lead us to the organizations, the restaurants, the coworkers, the family members, the broken, and the hopeless that need to experience the peace, joy, grace, and healing that you give us. Help us walk in obedience with a new boldness and ability to embrace the uncomfortable as we seek to serve this city with Christ-like love. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
