Too often, we focus on ourselves and our own abilities.
This leads to discouragement and disappointment. When I focus on myself, I start to realize all my inadequacies and failures and all the reasons why I can’t accomplish what I’ve set out to do. I convince myself that I am the way I am and that I’ll never actually see a change.
I’ve spent a lot of time focusing on specific areas—getting rid of anxiety/excessive worries as well as being the best wife and preparing to be the best mom I can be. Looking back, I’m amazed about how far I’ve come, but there is something crucial missing that I've recently discovered.
I've learned that it’s not about my ability.
I don't need to operate out of my own strength. I don’t have to look within myself to become the best wife and mom or to kick anxiety to the curb. I have a Father in Heaven ready to partner with me and the Holy Spirit within me to encourage, empower and strengthen me as I set out towards my goals.
I spent too much time with myself in the control seat. I thought that it was up to me to feel less anxious. I’d pray and pray, and then sit waiting to feel less anxious—yet not actually believing I had received what I prayed for. Do you see the problem? It’s great I was going to prayer, but I was missing a key ingredient to prayer—FAITH to receive.
In Matthew 7:8 it says, “for everyone who asks, receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.” This all according to His will and promise for your life.
“Now I can finally see it. You’re teaching me how to receive it.”
The above lyrics are from Champion by Maverick City Music, and they hit me especially hard this morning as I began writing this. One of the biggest works the Lord has been doing in me (and I pray in you, too) is teaching me how to receive what he has for me. He’s been giving me eyes to see that if I desire to be less anxious in my life, He has that for me. It’s waiting for me. I don’t have to count on myself to obtain that.
So, are you anxious, too? Do you have bad habits? What’s holding you back from being the person you know God has called you to be? I encourage you to give this to the Lord and see him move in your life. Pray and believe you’ve received what you just prayed for. If you pray to be less anxious or rid yourself of the bad habit, believe that he’s graciously given you the strength to do so.
