Ghosted: The Building Blocks of Relationships

By:
Grace
Johnson

We were made for relationship and connection.

This week, Pastor Clyde conveyed visually and spiritually captivating words of wisdom about foundational aspects of relationships.

“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:12-13 (NIV)

Love is our language.

One of the points Pastor Clyde made was that building relationships quickly and in our own way, does not create stable relationships. This applies to all kinds of relationships: single, engaged, married, or with friends. He provided fundamental building blocks for Godly, healthy, and long-lasting relationships:

1. Communication

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)

Questions to ask ourselves:

  • Does your language create life or death?
  • What fruit is coming from your language? Is there positive or negative fruit in your life?
  • Do your words uplift and build up with bricks of encouragement?

2. Connection

"We will never be fully loved until we are fully known. Do people know you?" ~ Pastor Clyde Stackhouse

Questions to ask ourselves:

  • Are you trying to “do life” alone?
  • Do you have someone in your life who you can share the mountaintops and valleys with?
  • Have you tried connecting with her heart before connecting with her body? (for married couples)

3. Servanthood

"In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” Acts 20:35 (NIV)

Questions to ask ourselves:

  • Is our response to give or to take?
  • Are we looking for ways to be generous?
  • Do we view relationships as convenient? (Relationships are not convenient, especially if we are looking for long-term, stable relationships.)
"Serving is our honor." ~ Pastor Clyde Stackhouse
