Healthy Habits on a Budget

Ain't nobody got time for that.

I think some of the biggest misconceptions when it comes to being healthy is that it "takes too much time" and/or "it's too expensive." But I'm here to tell you that I am living proof that you can live a healthy lifestyle on a budget! For those of you who don't know, I live off of a teacher salary, and I also have a very full schedule between work, church, having a social life, and leading in various areas of ministry. It may seem impossible to fit in meal planning, working out, grocery shopping, and rest, but it is very doable and also needed for you to live the best life you can live!

Here are some practical tips on how to live a healthy lifestyle

1. If you don't plan, you plan to fail.

I know this is strong language, but it's the biggest tip I have to have a disciplined, healthy life. If you don't make up your mind about when you're going to meal plan, when you're going to workout, and when you're going to rest, then it will never happen. It truly is a matter of the will. You may have to sacrifice some things like watching a TV show or scrolling social media, but I'm here to tell you that it is so worth it!! I have never regretted spending forty minutes exercising over spending forty minutes laying on my couch watching a secular show that doesn't do anything good for me or my mental health. Just sayin'.

2. Workout from home!

This may be a shock to some of you, but I do all of my workouts at home. Over the years, I have accumulated a collection of dumbbells that have paid for themselves a hundred times over. I have dumbbells ranging from 5 pounds to 40 pounds as well as workout bands. And I do all of my workouts through Beachbody on demand. They have dozens of programs on there that are research based, and they really work! I have saved hundreds of dollars every year by doing workouts at home. Don't get me wrong, I like being a plus one to a gym every once in a while, but at this point in my life, working out from home is a great fit for my schedule and budget. Not to mention, I save a TON of time by doing workouts at home because I don't have to drive to the gym, walk all over to find the right equipment, or worry about crowds. I'm in and out in no time! There are other free and low-cost workout apps that people use as well. You can check them out in this article, here!

3. Time to Cook!

In our culture today, I would say the majority of people tend to eat out on a regular basis. Although this is convenient and probably saves some time, it is definitely not cost-effective over the long term. Honestly, once you plan out your week well, you can actually save time eating at home because you're not having to drive to a restaurant or wait in line at the drive-thru to get your food. All of that time in the car can add up! (This includes coffee runs too!)

I know not very many people like shopping at a grocery store, but many stores now have Curbside Pick-Up which makes it so much more convenient and can save you even more time if you know exactly what you want! My favorite place to shop is Aldi. They do things a little differently than most grocery stores, but they are consistently cheap and their products are quality! Once you find the kinds of healthy foods you like, grocery shopping becomes predictable and easy in the best way.

4. "Just do it! Make your dreams come true!"

To quote Shia LaBeouf, seriously just DO IT! You know what you need to do. We make time for the things that matter to us. My health journey hasn't been perfect, and that's okay. Yours doesn't have to be either. Make a commitment to yourself, to your family, whatever you need to do to motivate yourself that being healthy is worth it. It's not just for you - it's for your family and your future self. The longer you stay healthy, the longer you can see your kids and your grandkids grow up and the more money you save by not needing to rely on meds to keep you going. Find your rhythm with it, and stick to it! Some people exercise super early in the morning, and some exercise after work (like me). Your rhythms will change with your seasons of life, and that's totally okay! Just don't give up. You are more capable than you think!
