I am who You say I am
How many of us have heard that Hillsong Worship song, “Who You Say I Am”, yet not fully grasp the profound truths that song possesses? I think another phrase we hear a lot is, “Know who you are in Christ!” but what if you don’t know? How can I begin to understand who I am in Christ when I don’t even know who He is? Well friend, this is written just for you.
I am chosen, not forsaken
The scripture we are going to focus on today to better understand how God sees us and, in turn, who we are in Him, is Ephesians 1:3-8 (NLT):
“3 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ. 4 Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. 5 God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. 6 So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son. 7 He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins. 8 He has showered his kindness on us, along with all wisdom and understanding.”
There are so many beautiful truths in this passage that show us just how much God loves us. Here are the main takeaways:
- God loves you and chose you. (v.4)
- God wanted to be with you since the beginning of time. (v.4)
- God sees you like His son, Jesus - holy and without fault. (v.4)
- God knew we would mess up, so he planned for Jesus to pay the price for our sins. (v.5)
- God adopted you as His own through Jesus. You are a child of God! (v.5)
- God wanted to do this. It wasn’t out of obligation - it was His pleasure! (v.5)
- God is rich in kindness and grace towards you. (v.6-7)
- God forgives you. (v.7)
- God counted the cost. He sacrificed His son on a cross for you. And you were worth it. (v.7)
- God has given you the gift of wisdom and understanding through the Holy Spirit. (v.8)
You are for me, not against me
There are hundreds of verses from the Bible that show just how much God is crazy about you. You don’t have to earn His love. You don’t have to be perfect or do xyz to be “good enough” for Him. You don’t have to earn His approval. You don’t have to be afraid to trust Him because He is faithful. You are so valued. The God of the universe came from Heaven to Earth to live as a human being and DIE for you. That kind of value is priceless. That kind of love is unmeasurable and unconditional. It sounds too good to be true, but it’s really too good to not believe.
In my Father’s house there’s a place for me
I hope at this point your posture is a little straighter, your smile a little bigger, your eyes a little brighter - YOU ARE A CHILD OF GOD! There is no better title, no better position, no better identity to have than this. When people disappoint you, belittle you, shame you, or leave you, you can come back to this truth: God will never leave you nor forsake you. He is always with you. He loves you, and He will never stop loving you. You are perfect in His eyes. He has SO MUCH for your life. Blessings upon blessings. Grace upon grace. Life more abundantly. All of this is only through his son, Jesus Christ.
So now that you know how God sees you, it’s time to start telling yourself who you are. Who you truly are in Christ. Then you can boldly say with confidence:
“I AM WHO YOU SAY I AM!”
