Summer is here!
And with that also comes VERY hot, and humid weather (at least in the midwest). Year after year, it seems like today's "fashion" encourages less and less clothing - especially when summertime comes around. As a Christian female who loves fashion but who does NOT love wearing clothes that are too tight or revealing, here are some tips to help you out as you are shopping for some new summer clothes this season!
Here's what "Hot Girl Summer" really means...
1) Ditch the crop tops
That's right. I said it. If it looks like a top that doesn't cover your whole torso - then it's not for you, babe. I'm AMAZED at how many so-called "shirts" are technically half of the fabric needed to be considered an actual shirt. Just because they're "in" does not mean they are "okay." And that's for anything related to our culture. Trends come and go, so don't get caught up in what the world says to wear because in the end, it doesn't matter what they say anyway.
2) Jean jackets FTW
I now have four different types of jean jackets in my closet because they are the best for layering any outfit! If you are wearing a shirt that may be a little tight, then adding a jean jacket would be the perfect way to complete the ensemble. Plus when the sun goes down, it can help you stay warm yet still fashionable!
3) Shorts?...idk fam...
Here's the thing about shorts...they are usually too short. Don't get me wrong, I wear shorts in the summer, but only when working out, going to a body of water, or if it is like 90+ degrees outside. Personally, I would never wear shorts to church. Time and place is everything. Context matters, too. I am not out here to shame anyone, but I am here to challenge why we wear the things we wear and what message that could be sending to those around us.
4) Social media hot take
While we're on the subject of summer fashion, let me lovingly challenge you in this: Don't post your half-naked selfies on social media. Or anything that could be misleading on your true intentions. You don't have anything to prove, sis. You are beautiful. We can all see that. Don't seek validation from man when you already have the approval of the Creator of the universe! He is the only One who can tell you who you are - and that is perfectly and wonderfully made.
5) Ask yourself this question...
If I walked into a room and Jesus saw me wearing this, what would He think? Would I be confident or embarrassed? Don't get me wrong, Jesus loves us no matter what. He knows your heart. But He also calls us to live holy lives set apart from the world. Finding clothes that are not a dime a dozen will take some intentional searching, but it is worth it. And really, anything we do in our walks with God is going to take intentionality. To be different than the world, we have to look different from the world, too. We don't have to sacrifice fashion for modesty. We can embrace both to show what true Godly grace, poise, and beauty really is!
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." Romans 12:2 (NIV)
