Have you ever been to the state line between Nebraska and Iowa on the pedestrian bridge?
People often place one foot on the Nebraska side and one on the Iowa side. In that case, where do they stand? Nebraska, Iowa, or both?
I believe this picture can be a metaphor of how we feel when we are unsure of where we stand. Whether it be uncertainty in what we believe in, our direction in life, relationships, or simply what we want to eat for dinner, not being sure about where we stand can lead to confusion and anxiety.
The LORD is my protector; he is my strong fortress. My God is my protection, and with him I am safe. He protects me like a shield; he defends me and keeps me safe. Psalm 18:2
Thankfully, we have a mighty and firm foundation found in JESUS!
Personally, I am a recovering people-pleaser who has often left situations feeling defeated, knowing I wasn’t bold enough to express what I truly believed or felt- often just saying what others wanted to hear to avoid conflict. Even if you can’t relate to my tendencies, perhaps you can relate to not knowing how to respond to the chaotic state of our world. With so many opposing “truths” and fake news, it can be difficult to know where we stand on certain matters.
Luckily for us, we have access to the one truth that is unshakable- God’s word.
"Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth." 2 Timothy 2:25
Maybe some of you have even been in a place in life where you “kinda” believe in God, or “sorta” follow Jesus. God is always 100% in it with us, but our lack of total surrender to Him can distort the great path God has set for us. This can lead to anxiety and fear of our future. Even those of us who are deeply rooted in Jesus fall short of surrender on a regular basis as we teeter on the edge of what God says and what the world says is best for us. We must constantly seek His face and pray for conviction!
"Don’t be afraid, because I’m with you; don’t be anxious, because I am your God. I keep on strengthening you; I’m truly helping you. I’m surely upholding you with my victorious right hand.” Isaiah 41:10
As followers of Christ, by planting ourselves firmly in who God is, He promises to strengthen and guide us. As we do this, surely this stability and goodness will overflow into everything else in our lives! As the Lord says in Revelation 3:16, “If you are lukewarm, I will spit you out!” It is time to plant both feet on the mighty rock of Jesus to live and speak with boldness and conviction in our homes, our work places, as we serve at our local church, and as we go about our daily lives.
We are ALL-IN!
