Planted: The Giving

Who do you trust?

Today was the third sermon in our four-part series of Planted titled: The Giving. Based out of Acts 2:41-47, Pastor Eli Nelson shows us the 4 G’s of what it means to be planted: the Gathering, the Growing, the Giving, and the Gifting. (If you have missed either of the last two weeks, read the blog and listen to the podcast on The Gathering and The Growing to hear powerful messages on the importance of being planted in the House of God so you can grow into who God has called you and created you to be.

Are you giving God access to be your provider?

“All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.” Acts 2:44-45 (NIV)
“All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.” Acts 4:32 (NIV)

To flourish in life means to give all of your life to God. If God doesn’t have your treasure, does He really have your heart? God’s not trying to take money from you. He’s trying to give something better to you. You can do all the right things, but if you never open your heart financially to the things of God, then you don’t have money. Money has you.

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33 (NIV)

Giving is aligning your heart to His kingdom instead of your kingdom. You align yourself to the purposes of God instead of your own. If I tell my money where to go, then I’m telling my heart where to go. Just like in Matthew 6:21: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Are you giving God a tip or a tithe?

“’What sorrow awaits you Pharisees! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore justice and the love of God. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.'” Luke 11:42 (NLT)

Tithing is giving God what’s His FIRST. You trust Him before paying for anything else. Giving God what’s left is not tithing. It’s a tip.

“Tithing is not a debt that you owe. Tithing is a seed that you sow.” ~ Pastor Eli Nelson

Money isn’t something to cling to. It’s meant to be released and out to work. It’s like water – it’s fluid. That’s why it’s called currency. You may not always get a return on what you sow, but your Father in heaven sees and He will reward you for your faithfulness.

Money pays, but it doesn’t provide.

Whatever you don’t submit to God has the opportunity to live in defeat and deception. You curse yourself by the way you choose to live. If you never submit your finances to God, you will live like you are cursed because you never trusted God as your Provider. You will always be in need.

“Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. 2 With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet. 3 Then Peter said, ‘Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? 4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.’” Acts 5:1-4 (NIV)

Everything we have is not about owning, it’s about stewardship. Everything you have is subject to lay at Jesus’ feet. Giving is no one else’s business but between you and the Lord. It’s less about comparing to one another and more about how truthful we are to the Lord. Giving is not a requirement, but it’s an invitation for you to let God be your provider.

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19 (NIV)
