I never really knew what it meant to serve.
I went to church growing up, but “serving” was never encouraged. As long as you went to church you were “good." Something that I have learned over the past few months is that serving is something that really does help strengthen not only your love for all of God’s children but also your relationship with Him. I've also learned that we need to do our part in making sure that we are preparing ourselves mentally, spiritually and emotionally before walking into Sunday.
“Everything you say and everything you do should be done for Jesus your Lord. And in all you do, give thanks to God the Father through Jesus.” Colossians 3:17 ERV
We are human. We all feel.
We all have things going on in our lives. This is why it's so important to get in a group so you have people around you that you can confide in, but to also be vulnerable with your leader. With that being said, we as #TeamMyCity, should arrive to serve knowing that we are the face of the church to whoever we interact with. That face could be a first time guest, a second time guest, or anyone that is a regular attendee. We should make it our ultimate goal to make sure they have the best experience every time they walk through the doors!
So what steps can you take to prepare yourself to serve at your best? Here are these three to start:
1. Read your bible daily
We all have personal lives, we all have responsibilities, but we should absolutely create time to read God’s Word. I’m not saying read the whole book of Psalms. It can be a verse a day, two verses a day, 5 verses a day, whatever you want. The goal is reading the Word. What I like to do is take notes from what I have read and really focus on what God is trying to teach me or have me take away from scripture that day. Since our phones are easily accessible, I would suggest downloading the Bible app and starting a bible plan. These bible plans range anywhere from 2-day plans up to a whole year; the choice is yours. This is a great way to start learning the Word of God, which is not just essential for serve His people well, but it's also the most important part of our walks as Christians.
2. Worship/Praise God
Another thing you can do is turn on some worship music and sing your heart out, or just simply give God thanks for all He's done in your life. I like to play worship music whenever I am driving or when I am working from home. I personally love to sing. Singing songs of praise to God and telling Him how much I love Him fires me up. Doing this sets the mood for the rest of the day and week, and I go into Sunday ready to share that joy with others.
3. Spend time with God
It's so easy to get caught up in the busyness of life, but creating time to just be with God is so important. We can't pour from an empty cup, and only God can truly refill us so we can give to others. And resting in His presence is such an amazing feeling. This brings an immediate peace that can only be experienced with Him. For me, this looks like sitting by my favorite lake at some point during the day. I prioritize this daily. I sit in my car with the windows down and just listen to the wind, the birds, or the water. Doing this and just taking in all the beauty that God created really helps me connect with Him.
“Whoever serves me must follow me. My servants must be with me everywhere I am. My Father will give honor to anyone who serves me.” John 12:26 ERV
So, if you have ever felt an emptiness or feel something missing in you coming into serving, I would recommend repositioning your heart. Focus on preparing yourself spiritually, mentally, and emotionally in days leading up to when you serve next. I can say from experience, it really helps me do everything as if I was doing it for the Lord.
I know I am doing something right when I see all of those smiling faces. I know I played a part in helping those that don’t know who God is, experience the love He has for them. So I encourage you, prepare yourself. It will make your serving experience that much more fulfilling, not just for yourself, but for others!
