We Contend, Not Compete

What does it mean to be a “City Girl?”

My City Church’s women’s ministry, City Girl, has been a powerful movement in the city of Omaha, Nebraska, touching thousands of women’s lives by the power of the Holy Spirit. We have put on dozens of events, have held consistent prayer meetings, hosted two conferences, and we are just getting started.

“We Contend, Not Compete”

is our most well-known tagline we like to say, but do we actually live this out? This blog is to enlighten you but also to challenge you to truly live how God calls us to live as women of God.

1. We are in Pursuit of Truth

We love the Bible. Believing it is the only book that builds a fulfilling life, we desire the Truth of God’s word in our hearts and minds. We don’t settle for the opinions of man and what the world tells us to believe. We pursue truth - no matter how difficult it may be to hear it. Because we know that the Truth will set us free (John 8:31-32).

2. We are Spirit-Empowered

We rely on the Spirit of God to lead us. We submit to His authority and joyfully walk in all He calls us to. We don’t do anything in our own strength. Even when we feel like we can or that we should, we are humble enough to realize that we can do nothing without the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. Even Jesus couldn’t have done his ministry on earth without the power of the Holy Spirit working in and through Him! We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13).

3. We are Real

We are passionate about living life in community. We are faithful and sincere with the relationships God has given us. We live intentionally, transparently, and vulnerably. We don’t try to pretend we have it all together. We are all struggling in some aspect of our lives, and we are not ashamed to talk about it because we know that there is freedom from the power of sin when we confess our sins to one another (James 5:16).

4. We are Self-Fed

Hungry for growth, we are determined to never quit on God, ourselves, or our community. We are in constant pursuit of growth, pushing through the limits of yesterday into what God has for us tomorrow. We don’t rely on spiritual leaders to give us our daily bread - we seek for it ourselves through communion with our Heavenly Father in the secret place (Hebrews 5:12-14). We are hungry for Truth, and we will continue to want more of God everyday for the rest of our lives.

5. We are Bold

We bring a fresh and robust Gospel to the world around us. We stand on the Truth and authority of Christ to push against the enemy of our souls, Satan. Our confidence is not in ourselves, but in the authority of Christ who lives in us. We live without fear because He is always with us. We have nothing to lose, and all to gain! (Joshua 1:9)

“After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.” Acts 4:31 (NIV)
Who Is A City Girl?

“A City Girl is humble and hungry for the truth of Christ, first in her life and then in the world around her. Having a passion for the Word of God and the Spirit of God, she is bold and secure in who Christ has called her to be. Generous in her love and faithful in her convictions, she stands strong in this life. Knowing that this world is not her home, she is in constant pursuit of the good and perfect will of God. Alongside her brothers and sisters in Christ, she overcomes, she moves mountains, and she changes this world for the cause of Christ.”

Are you a City Girl?

We contend, not compete. We cheer one another on and encourage each other in the Lord. We don’t gossip, and we are not jealous of each other’s successes. We are confident in the call of God on our lives, therefore we are not in competition with anyone else except ourselves.

It’s time to be who God has called us to be. It’s time for us to forgive ourselves and those who have wronged us. It’s time to let go of offense and make things right with God and man. It’s time to step into all God has for us. It’s time for us to come together as women of God to make an eternal impact in this city and in the lives of those around us. We are not like the world...
