The purpose of life here is not hidden.
It is not something that requires laborious searching. It has already been revealed, and the overarching reason is the same for everyone.
“God created me and you to live with a single, all embracing, all transforming passion, namely, a passion to glorify God by enjoying and displaying his supreme excellence in all the spheres of life.” - Don’t Waste Your Life (31)
Just as everything else created does, we look to our Creator for our meaning.
Our meaning is not to be created (such as existentialism suggests) from within us; it already exists and is made known to us by the Holy Spirit, a divine revelation. As much as culture will suggest, we must resist the idea that we are the potter—our meaning, the clay. For in Isaiah 64:8 it says, “But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand." As the potter chooses to mold the clay into a cup, or a bowl, or a vase—as our Father does with us. A cup may attempt to choose its own way, saying it’s a plate, but it doesn’t change its structure, the intent behind its intricacies.
“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. [...] Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Psalms 139:13, 16 (NIV)
Our purpose on earth is only truly fulfilled through the will of God. Some might ask, "What is God's will for my life?" But that's the wrong question to ask. God's will is the same for everyone - to follow His commands. This includes loving God above all else, loving your neighbor as Christ loves, forgiving those who have wronged you, etc. etc. Discover the gifts God has given you and use them to glorify Him. Your job is not your purpose. You are a child of God - that is the title you carry and the authority you have. You can live in the will of God no matter what He leads you to do or where He leads you to go. The only thing you need to focus on is keeping your eyes on Jesus. If you try to find purpose in life without Him, you will never find it. Because He is life. He is the way, the truth and the life! (John 14:6)
“Most men are not satisfied with the permanent output of their lives. Nothing can wholly satisfy the life of Christ within his followers except the adoption of Christ’s purpose toward the world he came to redeem. Fame, pleasure, and riches are but husks and ashes in contrast with the boundless and abiding joy of working with God for the fulfillment of his eternal plans. The men who are putting everything into Christ’s undertaking are getting out of life its sweetest and most priceless rewards." - J. Campbell White
May we give God all the glory as we love Him with all of our heart, soul and mind. May we love thy neighbor as thyself as a continuation of the love we so lavishly receive (Matthew 22:37, 39). As we submit to His revealed will, our laborious search for meaning will cease. Our long for identity will be satisfied. Our lives will turn to worship, and we will see our hands and feet be used for His eternal purposes, proclaiming the hope found in our Lord Jesus Christ, the holy Word revealed and displayed over 2000 years ago on earth for human eyes to behold.
This is where our purpose is found.
