Worship through Serving

Why do we serve?

There are many answers including building community ties, friendships, and a sense of belonging. Giving our time is a part of our worship on Sunday and throughout the week. Our actions also help us live the great commission.

“The King will reply ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.'” Matthew 25:40 (NIV)

Service is a very personal expression of our worship, faith, and life.

As you worship the Lord through serving, here are some guiding questions to help you find a good balance, along with an answer to your reasons for service:

  • What contribution and level of commitment do you wish to give?
  • What commitment is possible right now?
  • How is my service reflecting my faith life?
  • How has service helped me build friendships?
  • Why have I chosen to participate on the team I currently serve?
  • Is there another team that may fit better for me at this season of life?

The Great Commission Direction

Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.“ Matthew 28:16-20 (NIV)

Jesus points us in a direction - to serve others and to show and speak of our faith. Service is a solid, lifelong choice. In Omaha, there are numerous non-profit groups to give back with your time, talents, and treasure:

Action Step

A solid method of reviewing your service and personal commitment is to have a heart-to-heart conversation with a leader you admire and that you see accelerating in their faith. Transparency and loving directness may help you discover why you serve and new directions toward living the great commission that Jesus calls us all to live.
